A public math and science school?

Maybe so, according to this article. Battelle, Washington State University Tri-Cities and the Kennewick, Pasco and Richland school districts have teamed up to explore the creation of a public high school focused on math and science education.

Interesting idea and apparently Washington State isn't the first to think of it. Thanks to good 'ole google, I found that there are established high schools with a math and/or science focus all over the country. There's even one, Stuyvesant High School in NY, that's been around since 1904!

Still, it's a good idea and the joint school board agrees.

"These types of ideas are what I think will make our education system competitive globally," said Rick Jansons, president of Richland's school board.

It could take from six months to two years to determine whether the school will actually happen. Should they go the 6-month route, that means the school could open in the Tri-Cities as early as next year.

Kudos to the Battelle, WSU, Tri-Cities team for trying to help Washington State take education to the next level!

Residential?

I attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. It is a residential school, attracting students from all over the state. It was a great experience - a chance to be a geek with lots of other geeky students, coupled with some of the best teachers and students in the state.

Several other states have built similar residential schools, most notably the Illinois Math Science Academy, but Washington hasn't yet.

Anyone have more info?

Hi, Dan. I checked out the NCSSM site and it sure does look like a great school and experience! Thanks for mentioning it. In fact folks, their website is worth perusing as it's the country's first public, residential high school (meaning the students live on campus).

I don't know if Washington's will be residential. The school they compare it to in the article (it's also a school Battelle helped to start) is Metro High School in Ohio. Doesn't look like Metro's a residential school.

If anyone out there has more info on this, please share!
