It has already been a busy year for those involved with Washington’s new math standards. There have been multiple rounds of edits and revisions. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has held numerous public hearings. And, at the end of the legislative session, oversight of the math standards process was transferred from OSPI to the State Board of Education. The teacher introduced me to the group and it wasn’t until that very moment that I realized I was nervous to meet the 2nd and 3rd grade students I would be tutoring. I had forgotten how uncomfortable it is to be “the new girl” in class. Luckily, the teacher immediately tasked me with the job of passing out a snack, so I instantly became the most popular person in the room. As I handed out crackers and juice, the polite “pleases” and “thank yous” from the students made me smile. Snack distribution I’ve now mastered. Tutor, I was yet to be.

No, we’re not talking about the Fats Domino song—just the
fact that our state missed out on $13.2 million to strengthen math and science
courses. The grant from the National Math & Science Initiative would have
provided teacher training and coaching, tutoring for students, materials and
equipment, and incentives for teachers and students. But it’s gone now, because
NMSI was unable to reach agreement with Washington schools on the terms of the
grant contract and we’re sad.
