Now that you’re back, let’s get down to business…

I think we can all agree that the first few days of school often pass in a blur. But now that the pep assemblies are over and the syllabi have been handed out, let’s get down to business: We need more middle-schoolers thinking about their plans after high school, because, according to an article in today’s Seattle P-I, not nearly enough are right now.

Interlake ELITES Turn Hispanic Education Around

It’s been a grey, grey week, but when I read this Seattle Times article about the incredible power of mobilized Hispanic students at Interlake High School, things seemed a little bit brighter.

Almost Live-Blogging the State Board of Education Meeting, Part II

It's Day 2 of the State Board of Education Meeting in Vancouver, WA. Since I left off yesterday, there has been more rigorous discussion about the content of the new third year of high school math, CORE 24 and funding proposals for the Basic Education Funding Task Force. Stay tuned throughout the day for updates, non sequiturs and potentially juicy tidbits.

9:37 a.m. For you newshounds out there, CORE 24 has received not a shabby amount of news coverage today. Check out the coverage of the State Board's decision in the Columbian, Yakima Herald Republic and Tacoma News Tribune.

April Update

Washington Math Standards Move Forward

It has already been a busy year for those involved with Washington’s new math standards. There have been multiple rounds of edits and revisions. And, at the end of the legislative session, oversight of the math standards process was transferred from OSPI to the State Board of Education.

Fixing our leaky pipeline

Who says you can never go home again? I recently got back from a terrific meeting held by the Graduate and Professional Student Senate at my good old alma mater, the University of Washington. While I could wax Husky nostalgic, I won’t. Because, in terms of access, entrance and readiness for baccalaureate (and post-grad) institutions in our state, the situation is sobering.

College Board looks to reduce barriers for low-income students

This time of year takes on a special meaning for many high school students. No, I’m not talking about the approach of Thanksgiving and Winter break. I’m talking about the period of time I recall with a shiver of remembered stress and anticipation: College Application Season.

I loved this luncheon

Waiting on the corner of 5th and Olive, I stood behind a man dressed sharply in his brown suit. "I bet he's going the the Prosperity Partnership (PP) luncheon," I thought to myself. (C'mon, you and I both know higher ed folks wear a lot of suits.) I followed him across the street, through the revolving doors into the Westin, past the lobby and up the escalators. Who needs the perfectly positioned signs with arrows directing me to the luncheon? I had brown suit man.
