Ladies and Gentleman, the Washington Class of 2008

Just like the tagline of a cinema epic, the road forged by the class of 2008 has been a groundbreaking one, more than a decade in the making.

State Board of Education Approves New Math Standards

Newsflash: It’s finally done! Yesterday in Olympia, the State Board of Education approved OSPI’s revised K-8 math standards.

Our fingers are crossed that a plan to confirm the revised high school math standards will be out soon.

One train leaves Station A at 6 p.m traveling at 40 mph…you’ve heard this one before…

Two Trains   vs.   Algebra

An interesting article out of the New York Times this morning details a study that may debunk the age-old assumption that real-word, story problems—like the infamous “two trains passing in the night”—help students learn math better:

Washington Math Standards Move Forward

It has already been a busy year for those involved with Washington’s new math standards. There have been multiple rounds of edits and revisions. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) has held numerous public hearings. And, at the end of the legislative session, oversight of the math standards process was transferred from OSPI to the State Board of Education.

Math Standards Update!

Math UpdateIt’s that time again…time to check-in on how Washington’s new math standards are shaping up. When we last left the new draft standards, the State Board of Education’s math consultant, Linda Plattner, had assessed the standards and said that they aligned well to her initial recommendations in grades K-8, but that the high school math standards still needed more work.

When Math Professors Attack!

When Math Professors Attack!Saw an interesting article in the P-I today that pits 60 math and science professors from the UW—who signed an open letter—against the state’s new math standards. Apparently, many profs complain that college freshmen can’t do basic math, some instructors are dumbing down their classes and Washington math education is to blame.

A nation at war...

math wars...with math that is. As we continue to scream "math and science matters!" at the top of our lungs to folks in Washington state who haven't gotten the message yet, more complexities surface with those who've known it all along.

Math Standards Review, Part II

MathAs you may know, the latest draft of the state’s revised math standards was posted and presented to the legislature on Jan. 31. In their quest to make sure the new standards fit the needs of Washington students, however, the State Board of Education asked Strategic Teaching—the organization that originally offered recommendations on the state’s old standards—to see how well the new standards align with their recommended changes.

Math Night Lights

One of the best sessions I attended at the OSPI January Conference last week focused on math. But it wasn’t about student WASL scores or the new math standards or even math curriculum suggestions. No one argued and no one bantered about whose district was doing what. Instead we were posed with a simple question: Double 38.

The Monday Morning News: Spokane Math Forum, Senate Bill 6392 and more…

Snow Day!Who says Washington shuts down during inclement weather? Despite the chilly temps and snowy conditions (and the fact that one of my poor co-workers lost power), this week is shaping up to be packed with important ed events.
