Was I the only geek who liked Mystery Science Theater (MST)—the PBS show where robots sat around and made wisecracks about old sci-fi B-movies? Anyone? Bueller? Well, that’s a little bit what this blog will be like in the coming months regarding the revision of Washington’s science education standards. While we won’t likely be ribbing the standards revision a’la MST, we will be offering you front-seat commentary throughout the process.

No matter where we go, my husband is always looking up.
![]() "So that's how they make it have an Asian feel," he said when we were at MGM Studios at Disneyworld last year. We were standing in line for The Great Movie Ride (one of our favorites, btw) and he was, of course, looking up at the ceiling above us. The attraction is a replica of Grauman's Chinese Theatre and he had an "aha" moment as he examined the way the wood pieces fit together.

Earlier this week we posted a blog on the efforts of Carolyn Landel and the North Cascade and Olympic Science Partnership (NCOSP) at Western Washington University to improve science educaition and achievement in grades 3-10.

No, we’re not talking about the Fats Domino song—just the
fact that our state missed out on $13.2 million to strengthen math and science
courses. The grant from the National Math & Science Initiative would have
provided teacher training and coaching, tutoring for students, materials and
equipment, and incentives for teachers and students. But it’s gone now, because
NMSI was unable to reach agreement with Washington schools on the terms of the
grant contract and we’re sad.
